Designer Bridal Couture: The Most Luxurious Celebrity Wedding Dresses
Vera Wang, Vivienne Westwood, Oscar de la Renta - most of us can only dream of wearing these famous designers' stunning creations on our wedding day. However there are those lucky whom this dream is a reality and, of course, they are the super rich celebrity elite. Here is a rundown of the most extravagant, decadent and downright fabulous celebrity robe de mariée that will inspire envy in every blushing bride to be.
Modern
In her 1999 wedding to David Beckham, Posh Spice lived up to her name by wearing the ultimate in bridal couture: a luxurious, champagne coloured satin gown by Vera Wang. Wang’s most expensive creation was a custom made gown for Jennifer Lopez which she never even wore! The dress was meant for her wedding to Ben Affleck which never took place as the couple split. Lopez chose to wear another Wang design (a gorgeous lace, off-the-shoulder gown) for her marriage to Marc Anthony. Not all celebs enlist the talents of Ms Wang however, with Katie Cruise (née Holmes) choosing to wear a fitted, ivory silk organza gown designed by Giorgio Armani, decorated with Swarovski crystals.
Rock Chicks
Surprisingly, it is often rock stars pick the most traditional wedding dresses. In her wedding to fellow rocker Deryk Whibley, Canadian punk rock singer Avril Lavigne wore a very traditional, strapless organza gown by Vera Wang. Singer Pink also opted for a traditional gown but with a twist. She wore a tiered ivory gown embellished with a black silk bow by bridal couture designer Monique Lhuillier. Of course not all rock stars are so traditional, fashionista Gwen Stefani wearing a custom made Dior off-the-shoulder gown, with a unique fuchsia pink tipped skirt.
Royalty
With an estimated global television audience of 750 million, Lady Diana Spenser’s wedding to the Prince of Wales is perhaps the most famous wedding in recent history. Designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, Diana’s gown had a spectacular 25 foot train and was decorated with 10,000 pearls. An equally spectacular royal wedding was that of movie star Grace Kelly to Prince Ranier III of Monaco. She wore a demure, high-necked gown made from 125 year old antique Valenciennes rose point lace and twenty five yards of silk taffeta.
Fictional
Yes, so technically Carrie Bradshaw is not a real person but who can forget the stunning assortment of gowns that actress Sarah Jessica Parker wore in the 2008 Sex and the City movie? Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Lanvin, Christian Lacroix, Carolina Herrera, Christian Dior – almost every couture bridal designer was featured. For the actual wedding Carrie opted for a stunning Vivienne Westwood gown with peaked sweetheart neckline and an oversized peacock feather hair accessory (that of course only SJP could pull off!). Unusually, SJP opted for a black wedding dress for her own ceremony to Matthew Broderick, a decision she has recently admitted she regrets. Whether they are pushing the envelope with creative, eccentric designs or simply looking radiant in traditional white, it is evident that celebs really know how to do decadent luxury when it comes to wedding dresses. And aren’t we all green with envy!
